Viktar Ivashkevich: «European flag helps us to solve problems with authorities»

Viktar Ivashkevich, deputy head of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) received permission for holding a party congress in culture center of the Minsk Automobile Plant. It should be reminded that the politician declared earlier, if the authorities wouldn’t provide them with a space, the BPF congress would take place on Kastrychnitskaya Square in Minsk.
“Today Eduard Tamilchyk, head of mass public events department at the Minsk City Executive Committee has phoned me and said that center in response to my statement to hold the BPF congress on Kastrychnitskaya Square, the authorities offered us the MAP culture. The administration of the culture center explains their initial refusal with the fact that they can’t give the building after 6 p.m., as other events have been scheduled there. We have agreed that they allow us to use the building from 9 a.m. till 6 p.m. 8 and 9 December. The Minsk City Executive Committee will give us written permission tomorrow. After that I’ll go to the MAP culture center and we’ll sign an official tenancy agreement”, Viktar Ivashkevich said to Charter’97 press center.
The BPF head explains the decision of the authorities as follows: “It is called “knock, and it shall be opened unto you”. One needs to be persistent today, and then the authorities will make concessions. Lukashenka said at today’s meeting, if they don’t find money, we’ll lose all our social gains. European loans are vital for us, so the elementary democratic requirements find solutions. This autumn we have raised two flags on the European March – white-red-white one and European one. The European flag helps us to solve the problems with the authorities”, Viktar Ivashkevich said.
