Russia’s ambassador in Belarus Aleksandr Surikov said journalists on October 27, before the first session of the “house of representatives” that Russia would like the new parliament to consider a question of recognition of independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

Surikov also noted: “As far as I remember, Alyaksandr Lukashenka repeatedly said that he wanted the parliament of new convocation to solve this issue. I don’t know if it is going to consider this issue. It would be right to settle up all organisational questions at first, and then set to other points, including political ones.

Surikov emphasised that the composition of the parliament was “good”. “There are many experienced people, who worked in regional, district and city executive committees, in this convocation,” the diplomat said. “They dealt with solving people’s problems. I like this parliament much. The opposition in Belarus should understand that it hasn’t reached the level of political organisation allowing to take seats in parliament.”
