Activists of “European Belarus” arrested for rally near remand prison

Activists of the civil campaign “European Belarus” held a solidarity rally with the political prisoner Alyaksandar Barazenka.

Young oppositionists were standing in front of the wells of the remand prison in Valadarski Street in Minsk with burning candles. Policemen of the remand prison detained them. They called up a police tour of duty. From the remand prison activists of the “European Belarus” Maxim Venyarski, Paulina Dyakava, Mikhail Kandrashou and an activist of the “Young Belarus” Uladzimir Syarheyeu were taken to the police department of Maskouski district of Minsk. In the police department young people were held for an hour and released after they wrote explanatory letters.

“We lit candles in order to express solidarity with the detained Alyaksandar Barazenka,” the young people said to the Chater’97 press-centre.

On October 27 in Minsk an activist of the “European Belarus” Alyaksandar Barazenka was detained and placed under arrest. The activist is one of the accused in the “Process of Fourteen”, the criminal case initiated on charges relating article 342 of the Criminal Code against participants of the peaceful protest rally of market vendors held in Minsk on January 10, 2008.
