Myantsiuk sentenced to 5 years of minimum-security penal colony

Raman Myantsiuk, who is considered to be the party in fault of the traffic accident on the road Minsk-Mikashevichy, has been sentenced to 5 years in the minimum-security correctional labor facility.

Previously the lawyer of Myantsiuk, Alena Majsenya, told that she would not challenge the decision of the court of Minsk district if the verdict won’t be connected with deprivation of liberty.

The state accuser asked the court to punish R. Myantsiuk by five years of imprisonment in a minimum-security correctional labor facility and prohibition to drive vehicles for 5 years.

Yesterday during the interrogation in the court room of Maskouski court of Minsk Raman Myantsiuk stated that he didn’t see the “human shield” made by traffic policemen.

Answering the questions of the state accuser, Myantsiuk said: “I didn’t see the “human shield”, I didn’t see the 4 cars in front of which I was supposed to stop. I couldn’t suppose cars were standing there”.

Answering the question of the state accuser, he said: “There wasn’t emergency application of brakes by me before the “human shield”. I do not remember what I bumped into, and I recovered consciousness in the hospital. I spent a day in the Neurosurgery research institute. Initially a hematoma of the left hemisphere was diagnosed, and later brain concussion”.

The accused admitted guilt fully. Myantsiuk sent an appeal to the court not to be punished by deprivation of liberty.

On March 2, 2008 while driving the car Volkswagen Golf at a speed of 160 km/hand being drunk, R. Myantsiuk became a culprit of an accident on the 8th kilometer of the road Minsk-Mikashevichy. In order to stop the violator, traffic policemen stopped a few cars with people in them and blocked the road by the cars. Passengers and drivers stayed in the cars. Five persons, including Myantsiuk’s fiancée Volha, were hurt.

On March 17 the prosecutor’s office of Minsk region initiated a case against Raman Myantsiuk on charges relating Article 317 Part 1 (violation of traffic rules negligently which caused less serious injures).

Earlier Raman Myantsiuk three times serves sentenced for different crimes. He was convicted for a theft, for a carjack and hooliganism. The 28-year-old man has spent 10 years and 3 months in prison in total.

V. Myantsiuk is charged under Article 318 (allowing a person not eligible to drive a car or under the obvious influence of liquor to drive) of the Criminal Code of Belarus.

The case of Volha Myantsiuk is to be considered on October 30 in the court of Minsk district and Zaslaul.

Two traffic policemen who made the “human shield” are fired and sentenced to two years of conditional imprisonment.
