EU expecting Kazulin’s release

The European Union urges the Belarusian authorities to release political prisoner Alyaksandr Kazulin.

EU’s president Slovenia on behalf of the European Union extended condolence to Iryna Kazulina’s relatives – her husband and daughters. The EU’s declaration of 27 February pointed out that former presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin had received a release to attend his wife’s funeral.

The European Union reiterates its call upon the competent Belarusian authorities for the permanent and unconditional release of Mr Kazulin. The final release of all political prisoners would be considered by the EU as a concrete step towards Belarusian compliance with core European values of democracy, human rights and the rule of law,” the declaration runs.

These actions, as Slovenia thinks, “would enable the EU to progressively re-engage with Belarus, in connection with further steps by Belarus in that direction.”
