Viktar Ivashkevich was elected chairman of the Minsk city organization of the Belarusian Popular Front (BPF) at the organization’s general conference held on February 1.

Mr. Ivashkevich’s predecessor, Vadzim Kanapatski, was elected deputy chairman of the organization.

Those present heard reports by Mr. Kanapatski and Alyaksey Kavalets on the organization’s activities.

Speakers at the conference suggested that the Minsk city organization should concentrate its effort on preparations for celebrating the 90th anniversary of the 1918 Belarusian National Republic, and on preparations for the forthcoming parliamentary and presidential elections.

BPF Chairman Lyavon Barshchewski and First Deputy Chairman Vintsuk Vyachorka delivered reports on the present political situation in the country and the Front’s short-term plans.

At a BPF convention held in December, Mr. Ivashkevich, 48, was reelected as deputy chairman of the party. //BelaPAN
