Human rights defenders calling for solidarity with Zmitser Zhaleznichenka

  • 7.02.2008, 16:36

Belarusian Helsinki Committee (BHC) called citizens of the country, governments of the EU countries and the US, and international human rights organisations for expressing solidarity with Zmitser Zhaleznichenka, democratic activist from Homel, who had been expelled unlawfully from university and called up for military service.

Human rights activists think the decision on dropout of an A-student and army draft was politically motivated, because Zmitser was taking an active part in public and political life and was a member of the oppositional Belarusian Popular Front party.

Addressing the citizens of the country, the BHC offers to write a letter of support to Zmitser Zhaleznichenka himself (Homel area, Zhlobin, Leningradskaya Str., military unit 83469) and letters to A. Rahachou, rector of F. Skaryna Homel State University (Homel, Savetskaya Str., 104) and minister of education A. Radzkou (Minsk, Savetskaya Str., 9).
