The Central Election Commission will not register the leader of the Belarusian Social Democratic Party (Hramada) Mikalay Statkevich as a candidate for deputy. As informed by the secretary of the Central Election Commission, it is connected with the fact that the politician has a previous conviction.

“Statkevich was indignant himself, that his initiative group had been registered. He said: “On what grounds have it been done? I have a previous conviction”. He was answered that he had registered an initiative group, and not a candidate Statkevich. And he would be denied registration as a candidate, and he has a criminal record which hadn’t been cancelled,” Mikalay Lazovik said in an interview to European Radio.

However, Mikalay Statkevich is still set to be registered as a candidate.
