Russia will have to respond militarily to the deployment of US missiles close to Russian borders. President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev told it in Sochi in an interview to Al Jazeera on Tuesday, 26 August.
“Speaking about missile system, deploying of missiles and a radar station in Poland and the Czech Republic creates additional tension and we can’t perceive it other than a threat to Russia, whatever the motives of the NATO are,” Medvedev said.
“We are told some countries constitute a threat, but it’s nonsense!” Medvedev said.
“These missiles are close to our borders and constitute a threat to us,” the Russian President told.
“This will create additional tension and we will have to respond to it in some way, naturally using military means,” Medvedev said.
“I think the NATO understands it, it is a choice of North Atlantic Alliance, it is not we who deploy missiles,“ the Russian President added.
The General Staff of the Russian Federation said earlier that US intention to deploy Patriot missiles air defense system in Poland had no connection with “Iran’s problem” and created a threat to Russia.
It should be reminded that Poland and the US signed agreement on deployment of US missiles in Poland, under which Pentagon plans to station 10 interceptor rockets at a base near the Baltic Sea.
Russia threatened it might respond in case Pentagon would fulfil it plans. The case was in retargeting at objects in Poland and the Czech Republic. A possibility of deploying of Iskander ballistic missiles and strategic bombers in Belarus wasn’t excluded.
Alyaksandr Lukashenka agreed to create a united missile defence system with Russia at a meeting with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev on 19 August. The heads of Belarus and Russia agreed to hold a session of the state council of the “union state” in autumn where an agreement on creating a single air defence system is to be signed. The secretariat of the “union state” gave to understand it would be a response to deploying of US missiles in Europe.
Belarusian military forces prepare response to US missile defence system
The Belarusian military have extremely negative attitude towards the American missile defence system in Poland and are going to take appropriate steps.
Minister of defence general-colonel Leanid Maltsau said it on 21 August.
“In my view, it is a very dangerous precedent. Those who deploy these arms are crossing the dangerous line. South Ossetia is an example of the result of such “muscles pumping,” M. Maltsau said at a press conference in Erevan.
Deploying US missile defense elements in Poland may have unpredicted consequences, L. Maltsau noted.
“We have peaceful atom, I mean Chernobyl nuclear power plant, exploded near us, and three countries, Russia, Ukraine and Belarus, applied much efforts to eliminate the damage caused by the Chernobyl accident. In this case, we deal with a non-peaceful atom,” the Belarusians defence minister said.
