Results of parliamentary vote are key to US-Belarusian relations

The conduct and results of Belarus’ parliamentary elections are key to the future of relations between Belarus and the United States, Robert Wood, deputy spokesman for the US Department of State, told reporters in Washington on September 25.

“I think the upcoming elections are an important test,” he said. “And we will be watching the elections to see how they’re carried out.”

US Assistant State Secretary David J. Kramer said earlier this month that the United States would have the possibility to develop “a more robust relationship” with Minsk if the Belarusian authorities showed that they are “truly committed to democratic reform.”

"For an improved relationship to be possible, Belarus must truly abide by its commitments as a member of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe to respect human rights and fundamental freedoms and democratic norms," he said in the US Congress on September 17.

Mr. Kramer said that the recent release of political dissidents was an encouraging step, expressing hope that the Belarusian government "shows a true, sustained commitment to democratic reform and respect for human rights."
