Mikalai Khalezin: “I won’t go to “election”, but will vote at October Square”

“I won’t go to the “election”. I won’t go, though I have been missing the election, the free election, for the last 14 years,” head of the Free Theatre Mikalai Khalezin says.

“It has become a dream: to get acquainted with candidates; compare their views; decide who to vote for and become responsible for the future of the country...” the playwright told in an interview to the Charter’97 press center.

“I have two daughters of nine and fourteen years. They have grown without knowledge of free election. If the authorities look in their eyes, they won’t see their future in them: my daughters don’t like dictatorship. They like freedom and hope everything will change soon. I hope for this, too. That is why I always return home for the day of election. This time, we have come back from an abroad tour to play performances ahead of the election. To play for those who appreciate freedom and, like me, want to choose the future.

I won’t go to the election but I will elect. I will vote for my future not in ballots but by my presence at October Square. I know that those who believe in the Future, Justice, and Freedom will gather there on this day,” Khalezin said.
