In Chernihiv Alyaksandr Lukashenka expressed gratitude to Ukrainian president for “assistance” in normalization of relations of the Belarusian regime with the West.

“I would like to thank you for the colossal support lent by you at different levels, during meetings with Europeans and the US. And there was your contribution to establishing the dialogue established between Belarus and the West too,” A. Lukashenka said in Chernihiv on Tuesday during the talks of the Belarusian and Ukrainian delegations, Interfax informs.

A. Lukashenka stressed that “this dialogue is developing in the positive aspect”. The Belarusian leader also believes that interaction of Belarus and Ukraine in the framework of the European Neighbourhood policy is possible. In particular, he believes that the both sides can offer “a number of projects which interest Europe”. “There are more than a dozen of such projects at the moment,” A. Lukashenka said.

What else has been discussed in Chernihiv?

“We resume buying electricity. There are all possibilities for that, including technical ones,” Alyaksandr Lukashenka said.

As noted by the Belarusian leader, during the one-to-one meeting with Viktor Yushchenko “we talked a lot on issues of energy, development of a transport corridor between the Black Sea and the Baltic Sea”. “We have touched upon the issues of reconstruction of those routes frozen after the disaster at Chernobyl nuclear power plant,” A. Lukashenka said.

“We have also agreed to simplify the work of our economic entities in view of the global financial and economic crisis. We are committed to maintain the present level of turnover,” A. Lukashenka noted, saying that in the near future co-chairmen of the intergovernmental commission are to meet to implement the agreements of the two presidents.

“Our arrival was very important,” said the Belarusian leader, clarifying that “about 10 days more are needed for some issues to be explored by the governments”.

In his turn the Ukrainian president has also informed that during the meeting of the two presidents “much time has been dedicated to the issues of borders, readmission, simplification of the border regime, citizens’ registration, issues of the transit and transport”. “We see a considerable growth of the bilateral relations, and we are ready for boosting the whole complex of these relations,” V. Yushchenko said.

The Ukrainian president has stated that “a good dialogue, trust between the states, the leaders of the states and governments” exist today.

The one-to-one meeting of Yushchenko and Lukashenka lasted for more than 3.5 hours.
