Oppositionist not allowed to electoral commission in Homel

A city territorial commission for elections to the Local Council was formed at a joint sitting of the city council presidium and city executive committee in Homel on January 27.

Former member of the USSR Supreme Council, member of the United Civil Party Yury Varonezhtsau represented the United Democratic Forces. However, he wasn’t included in the commission, Radio Svaboda reports.

All members of the city council presidium and city executive committee voted against Varonezhtsau, two people abstained from voting.

Historian Svyataskau Shapavalau, a representative of the Belarusian Christian Democracy party wasn’t included in the commission as well. All voters were against him. The only person to abstain was head of the city executive committee Viktar Pilipets.

The city commission is composed of 13 persons. One third of them are representatives of political parties and NGOs – members of the Communist Party of Belarus, BRSM, war veterans and official trade unions. The rest is city officials, proposed to the commission by different ways, including collecting signatures, and representatives of labour collectives.
