Today the US House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs is to consider Belarus Democracy Reauthorization Act.

On Wednesday this document was approved by one of the subcommittees, Radio Svaboda informs.

“The fraudulent December 19, 2010 election in Belarus and the ongoing crackdown on democracy activists and independent journalists by the Lukashenka dictatorship underscore the need for this legislation," - the author of the bill, Congressman Christopher Smith, has stated.

The US Congress is considering renewal of Belarus Democracy Act – a law, adopted back in 2004. The Belarus Democracy Reauthorization Act – 2011 is intended to help in promotion of democratic development, human rights and the rule of law in the Republic of Belarus, as well as to encourage the consolidation and strengthening of Belarus’ sovereignty and independence. The law authorizes increases in assistance for democracy-building activities such as support for non-governmental organizations, independent media – including radio and television broadcasting to Belarus, and international exchanges.
