Problems with sugar can be noticed in shops of Byaroza and Ivatsevichy after the recent consumer panic.

For the second time this year, people have rushed to buy sugar in big bags expecting another increase in price, Radio Racyja reports.

“I think sugar is already expensive, but I’ve heard rumours that it will go up again,” a resident of Byaroza says. “People buy bags of sugar if they have this opportunity. I do not have this opportunity. I am a pensioner. I buy 5 or 6 kilos, but it’s harvest season now and I make jams. If people talk about the rise sugar price, it’s not without a reason. We cannot trust our government whatever they say.”

The chief of the Belarusian State Food Industry company, Ivan Danchanka, assured Belarusians that prices would remain unchanged until new harvest sugar. Then everything will depend on purchase prices of sugar beet. It may happen so that prices will be much higher than now.
