Organisers of the People’s Assembly, a rally scheduled for October 8, are going to step up work on informing the population about the aims of the rally.
It has been stated on September 23 at the press-conference in Minsk by one of the rally’s initiators Viktar Ivashkevich.
The politician has also told that on September 24 overnight the office of the independent trade union of Radio and Electronic Industry, where the organizing committee of the People’s Assembly is situated, was raided: the door was smeared by black paint, a glass in one of the windows was broken. The organisers of the rally viewed this accident as a provocation which would not hinder their work.
“For a long time the authorities paid no attention to our actions. And finally they do. Only a few cases are known when people were detained for collecting signatures for holding the People’s Assembly. The regime does not know the laws existing in the country. We are told at police departments that we violate the law on mass events, though it is not applied to organisers of local gatherings. Police is not guided by the law, they are guided by orders of their superior officers given on the phone. Our actions are completely legal,” Viktar Ivashkevich stated.
Organisers of the People’s Assembly are going to address the prosecutor’s office, international political organisations in Europe, in trade union associations concerning the facts of law violations.
“I am sure that the regime would not dare to organize mass disband of the rally, as they are going to take part in roundtable discussions with Europe. It has been demonstrated by the silent protests on September 21. The regime is going to interfere on the sly,” Viktar Ivashkevich said.
After holding the rally on October 8 organisers plan to hold the People’s Assembly not later than November 12. More people are to gather there. In order to achieve that, they are going to organize an active campaign of informing citizens about the objectives of the rally.
