Zmitser Bandarenka marks birthday behind bars

Zmitser Bandarenka, the coordinator of European Belarus civil campaign and election agent of presidential candidate Andrei Sannikov, marks his birthday on September 28.
He turns 48 today.
The political prisoner cannot celebrate this event with his friends and family, because he is in prison now. The Belarusian dictatorship threw him into prison for two years for the events on December 19, 2010.
Zmitser Bandarenka faced tortures and cruel treatment in prison. He underwent a spinal surgery and was denied post-operative rehabilitation, but it didn’t break this courageous man.
Zmitser Bandarenka was nominated for European Parliament’s Andrei Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought in early September on the initiative of Polish MEP Marek Migalski.
This prestigious award was founded by the European Parliament in 1988. It is awarded to people and organizations that devote their life and activity to defending human rights and liberties, first of all freedom of speech.
