Human Rights Watch released its annual world on January 22.

The December 2010 presidential election in Belarus was flawed, crushing hopes for democratic progress in Belarus, the report says referring to the experts’ conclusion of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Radio Svaboda reports.

In the following months the authorities unleashed a harassment campaign, targeting human rights defenders, political activists, journalists, and lawyers. Severe restrictions on freedoms of association, assembly, and media remain and the level of repression is unprecedented, the report sums up last year’s events in the country.
