The relatives of the Belarusian political prisoners expressed their gratitude to the Pope for his attention to the convicts.

They asked him to contribute to their sooner release and not to stop praying for Belarus, Nasha Niva reports.

The relatives of the political prisoners responded to the visits of the Apostolic nuncio to the Belarusian prisons with and open letter. He met Mikalai Statkevich, Dzmitry Dashkevich, Paval Seviarynets, Ales Bialiatski, Siarhei Kavalenka and Paval Syramalotau.

It is known that on Tuesday Claudio Gugerotti will meet the Pope Benedict XVI and one of the topics of their conversation will be Belarusian political prisoners.

The relatives of the political prisoners state that “during 17 years the last dictator in Europe has been running the show in our country” and call sinful the system, which “stand on lies and fear”.

They address the Pope asking to “pray for us, for Belarus, for those who are suffering in dungeons, bearing the humiliations, violence, giving their lives for truth, freedom, justice and future, built not on the Communist but on the Christian values”.
