European Commissioner Stefan Fuele asks Kavalenka to stop hunger strike

Stefan Fuele, a European Union Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy has sent a letter to Syarhei Kavalenka. He asks him to stop the hunger strike.

Stefan Fuele has informed about that on Twitter.

“Belarus needs him and other people who are fighting for human rights and democracy,” the European Commissioner writes,

We remind that Syarhei Kavalenka started his hunger strike on December 19, 2011. After 30 days he suspended it under pressure of the administration of Vitsebsk remand prison, and resumed it on February 8.

Kavalenka was condemned for evasion from the punishment in the form of restriction of freedom for 2 years and a month. He had been sentenced to restriction of freedom for hoisting a white-red-white flag on a New Year Tree in Vitsebsk in winter 2010.
