Repression against Granit plant workers goes on

One more independent trade union activist was fired from Granit plant.

Mikalai Karyshau, a deputy head of the trade union branch on Mikashevichy-based Granit plant, was told in the personnel department a labour contract would not be prolonged with him, Radio Svaboda reports.

Mikalai Karyshau works at the railway loading shop on Granit plant. His contract expires on May 4. He is confident he can lose his job due to his membership in the trade union:

“I was told the contract would not be prolonged due to disciplinary sanctions. I received three penalties during the month. I have never had any penalties for seven years and now I've got three in just one month. I told the supervisor that it was done on purpose to have a reason to fire me. But he was just smiling,” Karyshau said.

Miakalai Karyshau noticed he had not been shown copies of the documents relating to disciplinary sanctions.

“I was told I could receive the copies only on a decision of the court. Of course I will go the court. I will appeal to the prosecutor's office to inform about discrimination over membership in the trade union,” Karyshau says.

The head of the independent trade union branch on Granit plant, Aleh Stakhayevich, has recently been fired, but says the trade union will defend its member.
