No hope to get IMF loan

  • 5.03.2012, 16:38

Granting a new loan to Belarus depends on readiness of the authorities for reforms and on position of the member countries of the IMF.

It has been stated by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) chairman Christopher Jarvis.

“Agreement between all representatives of governmental authorities, including the ones from the top echelons of power, will be needed for talks on the loan. Besides, a certainty is needed that a new program would be supported by all members of the IMF,” journalists were told by Christopher Jarvis in Minsk on Monday.

The IMF is also skeptical about the prospects of introducing the Russian ruble at the territory of Belarus.

“We have not discussed this issue (Russian ruble in Belarus) during this mission. And to my mind, it is an evidence that this issue is not on the agenda,” Jarvis said.

“Forming a currency union is a vast issue, and if it would be contemplated, a considerable amount of preliminary work would be needed,” he explained.

“We can see from the experience of the EU and Greece what problems arise in case ill-considered decisions are adopted,” C. Jarvis stressed.
