UCP activists detained for white-red-white flag in Katyn

Young activists of the United Civil Party (UCP) unfurled a Belarusian national white-red-white flag in memory of the victims of the Katyn tragedy and got detained by Russian secret services.

They were detained for ten minutes for an identity check and explanations regarding and symbols of Young Democrats (the UCP youth wing). After this the incident was offer, the UCP press service reports.

Activist of Young Democrats arrived in Smolensk (Russia) to honour the memory of army prisoners killed by Stalin henchmen and members of the Polish government delegation killed in a plane crash two years ago.

Mourning events on occasion of anniversaries of the two tragedies were held near the Katyn monument 20 km from the town.

“We took part in a mourning procession, laid flowers to the monument of the victims of the Katynmassacre,” Aleh Korban said. “There were a Polish delegation, representatives of the Russian authorities, police and plainclothes security agents. We visited Smolensk North Airport, the place of the Polish plane crash. A mourning meeting was held there. We are returning home now.”
