IIHF to consider moving ice hockey championship from Minsk

The issue was put on the agenda of a May meeting in Helsinki.

Euroradio has learned this from Sonia Nandzik, an assistant to Polish member of the European Union Marek Migalski.

We remind Minsk planned to host the 2014 Ice Hockey World Championship in May. The idea to move the event appeared after the brutal suppression of protests against the rigged presidential elections on December 19, 2010 and refusal of the authorities to release political prisoners.

The initiative was supported by many politicians and civil activists all over the world. The European Parliament and the UC Congress also supported the idea of moving the championship from Minsk.
