Anatol Lyabedzka has been re-elected chairman of the United Civil Party (UCP).

The decision was taken at the UCP meeting in Minsk on March 31, BelaPAN reports.

Lyabedzka was a single candidate at the election. Two opponents – head of the UCP youth branch Young Democrats Aleh Korban and head of the Vitebsk region branch Henadz Ananyeu – withdrew their candidatures earlier.

Lyabedzka was elected by secret ballot with 101 from 132 votes in favour, 23 votes against and 2 invalid ballots. The rest of the delegates abstained from voting.

Lyabedka said after the election, “A precedent has been created in Belarus – a person without a passport was elected leader of the political party.” We remind politician's passport was seized during his detention in Orsha on March 27.

Lyabedka proposed to elect Leu Marholin, Lyudmila Petina and Antanina Kavalyova as deputy heads of the party.
