BelTA: terrorist act in Gomel

An explosive device detonated in a shop in the Gomel city center on 19 April, BelTA reports citing the press-service of the Gomel region KGB department.
”The criminal case was launched by the Gomel region KGB department, according to part 1 article 290 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Belarus (terrorism threat). The launch of the case was caused by the detonation of a self-made explosive on 19 April 2012 at 13:58, which was done in order to perform a terrorist act in a shop in the central Gomel,” the press-service informs.
”The expertise will show if it was an explosive,” the KGB remarked. Moreover, it was said that no severe injuries had been caused. One person was slightly wounded.
The Gomel region KGB department in cooperation with the Investigation committee, the region’s prosecutor’s office and Interior Department criminal experts are investigating the crime.
The version of “gang wars” between organizers of illegal migration channels was elaborated basing on the data gained in the investigation, and the elements of the explosive and other findings. The organizers of illegal migration operate in Gomel under the disguise of foreign students.
“According to the information that the Gomel region KGB department received in early April of the current year, the so-called managers who had come to Gomel in order to ensure a place in the university for a large number of students from Syria, Yemen, Pakistan and Nigeria had been speeding up their work. Previously, such middlemen never came to Gomel, and all questions related to the university education were solved accordingly through the Belarusian Education Ministry,” the press-service of the Gomel region KGB department said.
The elements of the device found on the crime scene were manufactured outside Belarus and probably come from abroad, the press-service added.
According to the film of the security cameras, telephone connections analysis other data, the investigation is searching for two persons aged from 25 to 35, of medium height. One of the suspects is rather stout with a short beard and a clear scar on his face.
Meanwhile, the investigation is working with other probable versions.
