  • 25.05.2012, 7:00

According to the terminology of the international organization, a prisoner of conscience is a person jailed because of his or her political or religious beliefs.

Belarusian Syarhei Kavalenka, sentenced to imprisonment for hanging out a Belarusian national white-red-white flag, suffered from repression for his political views, struggle for democratic values and a free Belarus. Member of the European Parliament Marek Migalski thinks the Amnesty International should recognize Syarhei Kavalenka either political prisoner or prisoner of conscience.

In this regard, the MEP initiated a campaign to write letters to Amnesty International Poland demanding to recognize Syarhei Kavalenka prisoner of conscience and advocate for his case in international structures of the Amnesty International.
