Jury Hubarevich: Lukashenka’s regime will make concessions

The initiators of the Popular Referendum count on the support of the majority of Belarusian society.

This is how the deputy chairman of the Movement for Freedom Jury Hubarevich commented for the charter97.org web-site on the start of a new campaign, which had been announced yesterday at a press-conference in Minsk.

“The goal of this campaign is to give the people of Belarus the right to decide their fate and influence the ways their country develops. We want to acquire the support of that majority, which has turned away from the incumbent regime, but does not yet perceive opposition as a serious political entity able to pose an alternative to the current authorities”, - the politician noted.

He believes that the main problem in that situation is that people know little about the opposition and are in the captivity of the state propaganda.

“On the other hand, they do not always hear the positive suggestions of the opposition, which concern their lives and the development of the country. By the means of the campaign Popular Referendum we are planning to establish a wide debate at first, in order to define the set of issues that need to be solved. After that we are planning to suggest our solutions. Subsequently we count on the support of the prevailing majority of Belarusian society as to this idea”, - Jury Hubarevich highlighted.

He noted that the campaign’s initiators realize in what situation they are.

“First of all, we are in difficult conditions in terms of the information work with people and meetings as such. We know that the authorities will create obstacles to that. If we speak of the timeframe, then they are first of all limited with the level of support that we are planning to get from society. When we see that almost every adult Belarusian knows about the issue, suggested for the referendum, when we see that the support of this idea goes beyond opposition, then we will be able to go into purely technical details like collecting signatures and applying for a referendum. I think that in this case the authorities will have to make concessions to Belarusian society and agree to this referendum. Otherwise they will have to leave”, - the politician is sure.

We would remind that yesterday the Movement for Freedom, BPF party and Tell the Truth civic campaign announced the start of a campaign Popular Referendum. The three organizations announced long-term strategic partnership at the press-conference. According to one of the participants Uladzimir Niaklaeu the cooperation will at least hold for the three nearest electoral campaigns – municipal, presidential and parliamentary elections.
