Viktar Babaryka, His Son And Detained Members Of His Initiative Group Recognized As Political Prisoners

Belarusian human rights activists have demanded their immediate release.
Belarusian human rights activists have written a joint statement demanding the release of Viktar Babaryka and members of his initiative group, the spring96.org website reports.
They believe that the real grounds for criminal prosecution are political motives. On this basis, human rights activists recognize four detainees - Viktar and Eduard Babaryka, Sviatlana Kupreyava and Viktar Dudarau - as political prisoners.
"Given these circumstances, we conclude that the real grounds for criminal prosecution of Viktar Babaryka and members of his initiative group are political motives aimed at stopping his public activities related to his nomination as a presidential candidate and further participation in elections," - the joint statement reads.
The human rights center Viasna, the Belarusian Helsinki Committee, the center of legal transformation Lawtrend, Legal Initiative, Initiative Forb, the Identity and Law group, Human Constanta" the Assembly of non-governmental democratic organizations, the Belarusian House of Human Rights named after Barys Zvozski have signed the statement.
