The Economist: Belarus Scored At Level Of African Dictatorships In Democracy Index

This is the worst result in Europe.

In the index of democracy, prepared by the British edition of The Economist, Belarus has found itself between Guinea-Bissau and Sudan. Belarus has ranked 148th out of 167 countries. This is the worst rating in Europe, says thinktanks.by.

According to the rating, compiled by The Economist, Belarus has the worst democracy in Europe. The country is in the group of authoritarian states, ranking 148th place, which is lower than the index of Azerbaijan (146th), Kazakhstan (128th), Russia (124th) and Venezuela (143rd).

Such post-Soviet countries as Uzbekistan (155th), Tajikistan (159th) and Turkmenistan (162nd) are ranked below Belarus.

The experts have estimated the level of democracy in Belarus in 2021 at 2.59 points. By comparison, the leader of the ranking, Norway, got 9.81 points. Iceland with 9.37 points and Sweden with 9.26 points come in second and third places respectively.

In recent years, the position of Belarus in the Index of Democracy has only been getting worse. So in 2020, Belarus ranked 141st with 2.88 points, and in 2019 it ranked 137th with 3.13 points. In 2018, Belarus' score was the same.
