Minsk People Bid Farewell To Adam Maldzis

The Farewell Mass with Professor Adam Maldzis was held in the church of St. Simon and St. Helena in Minsk. It was conducted by Archbishop Tadeusz Kondrusiewicz.
Maldzis will be buried in the cemetery of his native village Zadvorniki, Astravets district, on January 5, Radio Svaboda reports.
Historian of Belarusian literature Adam Maldzis died on January 3 at the age of 90.
Adam Maldzis was a doctor of philology, author of unique research in the field of history of Belarusian literature.
In 1962–1991 he worked at the Institute of Literature of the BSSR Academy of Sciences.
He was the founder and director of the Francysk Skaryna National Research and Education Center.
About 200 people came to bid farewell to the Belarusian writer and historian, including well-known Belarusian cultural figures Lyavon Barshcheuski, Aleh Trusau, Yury Zhygamont, Aksana Sprynchan, Yazep Yanushkevich, Valer Mazynski.
There were no wreaths from the Belarusian "authorities".
"Adam Maldzis was a man of great merit, a professor very well known in Belarus.
Not only literature workers, writers, or historians, but ordinary citizens also know him.
He was a citizen of our country, and a faithful member of the Catholic Church, the one who shaped the Belarusian culture, studied it, and the one who left a lasting mark on our land," said Archbishop Kondrusiewicz.
