Beijing is not happy with Russia's rhetoric.

Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang has called threats to use nuclear weapons irresponsible and thus made it clear that Beijing is not satisfied with such rhetoric from its partner Russia. At the same time, Keqiang commented in detail on China's policy towards Ukraine and also made a clear emphasis on sovereignty in his speech.

According to Reuters, a White House source said on condition of anonymity that the Chinese premier made the statement at the Association of East Asian Nations summit in Cambodia.

The source said Keqiang hinted at Beijing's discontent with Russia's nuclear rhetoric. In addition, he spoke in detail about China's policy towards Ukraine. The premier emphasised respect for sovereignty.

"Li Keqiang made a clear emphasis on sovereignty, on the irresponsibility of nuclear threats, on the need to ensure that nuclear weapons are not used in the way that some have hinted at," the source clarified.

Moreover, the US official also added that despite China's partnership with Russia, "there was certainly some discomfort in Beijing about what we saw in terms of reckless rhetoric and activity from Russia."

China also seems surprised by the way events are unfolding in Russia's war against Ukraine.

"I think it is also undeniable that China is probably both surprised and even somewhat embarrassed by the course of the Russian war," the Biden administration official stressed.
