USA Sends Sixth Fleet Flagship To Israel's Shores

Mount Whitney has left its permanent home in Italy's Gaeta harbour.

The Pentagon has sent the flagship of the US Sixth Fleet Mount Whitney to the shores of Israel.

This was reported by the press service of the fleet.

The command ship USS Mount Whitney left the place of permanent basing in the Italian harbour Gaeta, "to support US operations in the eastern part of the Mediterranean Sea".

Earlier, the US moved a carrier strike group and warplanes closer to Israel in response to an attack by militants of the Palestinian Hamas Islamist movement. According to WP, Washington sent more than four thousand US sailors and marines to the country's shores.

The military were to arrive aboard the USS Bataan and USS Carter Hall, while a third ship in the unit, the USS Mesa Verde, was in the Mediterranean Sea and was to head towards Israel's shores.
