The ship itself was not their target.

The US destroyer of Carney, located in the northern Red Sea, shot down three missiles and several drones fired from Yemen in the evening of 19 October in the northern direction, reported "Details" with reference to the CNN TV channel.

The ship itself was not their target. According to Pentagon officials, the missiles could have been aimed at southern Israel.

"The USS Carney, located in the northern Red Sea, intercepted three cruise missiles meant to hit ground targets earlier today, as well as several UAVs launched by Houthi forces from Yemen," Pentagon spokesman General Patrick Ryder said at a media briefing.

"We can't say exactly where these missiles and drones were aimed, but they were launched from Yemen north along the Red Sea - possibly at targets in Israel," the general said.

One missile from Yemen was also reportedly intercepted by Saudi Arabia.

The Israeli military see signs that rockets from Yemen were indeed aimed at Israel. A senior Israeli official told the Walla publication about this.

Elint News, which specialises in examining warfare involving various proxy forces, reports: the Iranian-backed Houthis in Yemen may have a number of Iranian Sumar missiles with a range of over 2,000km, and drones including the Shahed-136 with a range of over 2,000km (which is just the straight line distance from the Yemeni border to Israel). The war that the Houthis have been waging since 2014 against the legitimate government of Yemen, backed by Saudi Arabia and the UAE, at the instigation of Iran, has already taken 130,000 lives and plunged this poorest state into famine.
