Belarusians organized an action of solidarity with political prisoners in Belarus in Białystok. More than two dozen people took part in it. On the city beach of Dojlidy, the activists unfurled white-red-white flags and held portraits of political prisoners, including Mikalai Statkevich, Pavel Seviarynets, Siarhei Tsikhanouski, Maryja Kalesnikava, and musicians of the Tor Band.
Several people traditionally swam in cold water as a sign of solidarity “in support of brave Belarusians who are imprisoned for their political convictions.”
In Belarus today there are almost one and a half thousand political prisoners recognized as human rights defenders. It is important to note that there are much more political prisoners in Belarus than the figure presented by human rights organizations. The Investigative Committee announced more than 10 thousand protest-related criminal cases, which allows us to assess the real scale of repression.
Human rights activists are simply unable to count the number of political prisoners in Belarus, and there are many questions about the criteria they use in assessing the people who are being thrown behind bars today.
