He was a senior advisor to the IRGC.

A senior adviser to Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) was killed in an Israeli airstrike near Damascus on Monday, three security sources and Iranian state media said.

Holding the rank of brigadier general, the adviser to the elite formation, known as Sayed Razi Mousavi, was responsible for coordinating the military alliance between Syria and Iran, Voice of America wrote.

The Israel Defence Forces refused to comment directly on the operation, saying that "the Israeli military's job is to protect Israel's security interests."

For years now, Israel has been striking Iranian-linked targets in Syria, where Tehran's influence has grown after supporting dictator Bashar al-Assad in the civil war that broke out in Syria in 2011.

Earlier this month, Iran said Israeli strikes in Syria killed two Revolutionary Guard fighters who were serving as military advisers there.

Iran has sent hundreds of Guardsmen to Syria as "advisers" to help train and organise thousands of Shiite militia fighters from Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan to support the Syrian government in the conflict. Lebanese Hezbollah fighters have also worked closely with Iranian military commanders in Syria.
