Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki ‘Froze’ Putin and Lukashenka’s Enthusiasm

Historical truth is stronger than propaganda.

Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki spoke about the current events on the border with Belarus and the threat assessments by Warsaw regarding the Wagner troops in Belarus.

The politician gave an interview to Italian news publisher Corriere della Sera.

The Polish Prime Minister said that the country has been under attack on its eastern border for more than two years. According to him, this is a joint plan of Russia and Belarus and they wanted to destabilize not only Poland but the EU in general.

“They cynically used migrants to strike on Polish security structures and destroy unity between European allies,” Mr Morawiecki said. “We’ve registered more than 16,000 attempts to illegally cross the Polish border only this year. This is a threat to our state. Ensuring the security of the eastern border of Poland, which is actually the external border of the EU and NATO, is our priority.”

Mr Morawiecki also described the assessment that the Polish authorities gave to the threat associated with the deployment of the Wagner mercenaries in Belarus.

“We have seen in Africa and Ukraine what they are capable of,” the Polish Prime Minister said. “Recently, more than a hundred Wagnerites arrived in the Suwalki region, not far from the Polish border. This could be the next stage of the ongoing hybrid assault on Poland.

The Wagner troops pose a threat because they can disguise themselves as Belarusian border guards and help illegal migrants enter our country. They can also train migrants on provocations and attacks on Polish services. They could also try to cross the border themselves, posing as illegal immigrants, and then try to destabilize our country.”

In addition, Mr Morawiecki commented on Putin's statement that the western regions of Poland were a "gift from Stalin" for Warsaw.

“It was the Soviet Union with Nazi Germany that invaded our country [in 1939] and captured the eastern territories of Poland. In Yalta [in February 1945, at the conference of the allies in the anti-Hitler coalition], the superpowers made decisions, and Poland received territories in the West as compensation for what Stalin annexed to the USSR in the East [we are talking about Western Belarus and Western Ukraine. Ed.]. This [the lands of Poland in the West] is not a gift from anyone, and Poland has no territorial claims against any of its neighbours regarding their lands. This is historical truth, and it is stronger than Russian propaganda.”
