The non-public assessment was made based on "many indicators".
The founder of Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, was on board a business jet that crashed the day before in Russia’s Tver region. A senior Western intelligence official reported it to The New York Times.
He clarified that this non-public assessment was made on the basis of "many indicators" that government officials analyzed.
The search operation at the crash site of the Embraer ERJ 135 aircraft with tail number RA-02795 ended at about midnight on Wednesday, five hours after Prigozhin's jet disappeared from radar screens. The remains of 10 bodies were found at the crash site - the same number of passengers were in the jet.
