Major Fire Breaks Out Near Sochi Airport After Explosion

In the morning of Wednesday, September 20, a large-scale fire broke out in Sochi (Krasnodar region of the Russian Federation) in the area of the international airport and Rosneft petrol station - the fire there engulfed a fuel tank. Propagandists are already claiming that the facility could have been "attacked by a drone".

Before that, residents were talking about the loud sound of an explosion. Russian Telegram channels wrote about the emergency, publishing footage from the scene, reports obozrevatel.com.

According to their data, the explosions occurred near the civilian airport at about 05:15. It is located in the resort district of Adler, 28 km from the centre of Sochi.

After the explosion, high flames and thick black smoke rose above the city. Propagandists said it was a fuel tank on fire.

Later, other resources reported that the fire in Adler district engulfed a tank with 1200 tonnes of paraffin. They also said that the emergency could have been "the result of a drone attack."

With reference to local residents, the propagandists noted that a loud explosion was heard there around five in the morning. The Russian Emergencies Ministry arrived on the scene and extinguished the 100 square metre fire with the help of foam, assuring that "there is no threat of fire spread".

The resource of independent Russian journalists ASTRA specified that after the explosion the fire destroyed the tank near the petrol station "Rosneft" on Aviatsionnaya Street.

Krasnodar Region Governor Veniamin Kondratyev confirmed that a tank caught fire in Adler district of Sochi on Wednesday morning, but with diesel fuel. The area of the fire was 96 square metres.

The official said: tentatively, there are no casualties and no threat of fire spreading either; more than 60 people and 15 units of equipment are working on the site, and the causes of the emergency are being investigated.
