Recruitment is mainly from poor and rural regions of the Russian Federation.
British intelligence believes that the authorities of the aggressor country Russia significantly overestimate the size of its army.
This is stated in the intelligence report of the British Ministry of Defence, published on Monday, January 15.
The intelligence service noted that on 11 January the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said that 500,000 people would join the Russian armed forces in 2023.
"It is likely that this figure is significantly inflated," British intelligence said.
According to British intelligence, the Russian military has been allowing school leavers to sign contracts with the Russian army since April 2023.
The latest figures, published by Mediazone and the BBC's Russian service, show that at least five Russians born in 2005 have been killed in the fighting.
The intelligence service also believes that the recruitment of military personnel for the war against Ukraine is coming mainly from poor and rural regions of Russia.
