Native Of Ukraine Sentenced To Three Years In Colony In Belarus

For insulting Lukashenka.

The court of Liozna district in Belarus sentenced a native of Ukraine Volodymyr Lysitsa to three years of colony of general regime for insulting dictator Aliaksandr Lukashenka.

The convict was also found guilty of insulting representatives of the authorities. In addition to imprisonment, the court imposed a fine of Br7,400 ($2,260) on the man.

Also Lysitsa must pay Br3,000 ($916) each to the Prosecutor General of Belarus Andrei Shved and "deputy" of Navapolatsk City Council Ihar Miadzvedzski as "moral damage".

According to the investigation, the convicted man wrote "obscene comments" against Lukashenka, military commander of Homel voblast and several deputies of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus to posts in the Russian social network of Odnoklassniki.

According to human rights activists, Lysitsa pleaded guilty in court, but said about the compensation for moral damages to the Prosecutor General of Belarus and the "deputy" of the City Council that they were "excessive sums".

Volodymyr Lysitsa is a native of Sumy region. In September 2023, the prosecutor's office of Liozna district recognised the man's page in Odnoklassniki as extremist material for his anti-war posts and avatar with the Ukrainian flag.
