The distance from the Ukrainian border to Penza is more than a thousand kilometers.
Rosneft's oil depot on the eastern outskirts of Penza, which was attacked by Ukrainian drones, has been burning for the second day, according to a report by the region's governor Oleh Melnichenko. According to him, 150 firefighters and 40 units of equipment are involved in the liquidation of the consequences of the raid.
In view of the specifics of fire extinguishing at such facilities, rescuers let oil products burn out completely and try to prevent the spread of flames, the head of the region said. In addition, due to low temperatures in the region, a special heating point was organized for firefighters near the scene of the incident.
The oil depot, owned by JSC "Penzanefteprodukt" ("Rosneft") and is one of the largest in the market of petroleum products in the Penza region and Mordovia, came under the attack of the AFU drones on the night of January 23. Melnichenko reported a fire at the facility and no casualties. Later, the AFU General Staff confirmed the defeat of the oil depot, noting that it is used to supply the Russian Armed Forces. Fuel from the storage facility is also supplied to local gas stations. The distance from the Ukrainian border to Penza in a straight line is more than 1 thousand kilometers.
Before that, the region came under Ukrainian strikes in late July 2025. Then the governor claimed an attack on a company in the Zavodsky district of the regional center, as a result of which a fire also broke out. Kiev reported that the target of the attack was Radiozavod, which works for the Russian military-industrial complex.
