Russia Has Completely Run Out Of Modern Tanks In Warehouses

OSINT analyst learned some shocking information.

Russia has completely exhausted its stockpiles of more or less modern versions of tanks. There are either unserviceable vehicles or completely obsolete models left in the warehouses. This was revealed by the open data analyst (OSINT) Covert Cabal, who specializes in the study of Russian military equipment storage bases using satellite images.

He notes that before the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, T-62 tanks (mass-produced in 1962-75) were only a small fraction of the total amount of equipment in storage in Russia. The basis of the Russian tank stockpile was made up of more modern T-72 models of late modifications and T-80.

Overtheless, during the war, almost all modern tanks suitable for repair had already been removed from storage. So now the T-62s have become the last great unused source of tanks for the aggressor.

According to Covert Cabal's calculations, as of early this year, there are still tanks in Russian storage bases:

112 T-55 units (very old vehicles);

784 T-62 units;

449 T-64 units (the RF does not have the equipment and experience to repair them, as they were produced in Kharkov);

452 T-72 and T-72A units (very early versions, which are technically not much better than the T-62);

188 T-72B units;

141 T-80 units.

The analyst believes that those T-80s and T-72Bs that are still in storage are probably in extremely poor condition and are in fact unsuitable for restoration.

So, apart from a small number of new tanks that Russia is producing entirely from scratch, to replenish the active army the aggressor has to rely solely on the obsolete T-62s, which until now have hardly been touched.

"The T-62 was an excellent tank some 50 years ago. But its armor is weak by modern standards, because it was created before composite armor was introduced as the norm. Its firepower is insufficient because of the smaller gun, it has poor mobility and an unreliable propulsion system, an extremely outdated fire control system and electronics, to name just a few problems," Covert Cabal notes.

In his opinion, the very technical concept of the T-62, its basic design and hull make it unsuitable for the modern battlefield.

"These T-62s are the last large stock of one type of tank that is still left. All the newer tanks have already been used. The T-90 is zero. T-80s are only 8% of what they were, that is minus 1,500 tanks. T-72s of all types - a reduction of over 2,000, and most of the remaining ones are in extremely questionable condition. Taking all this into account, Russia is no longer a 'country of tanks'," the analyst summarizes.
