The desire for freedom cannot be defeated.

During a mass at the Cathedral in Vilnius dedicated to the anniversary of the 1863-1864 uprising, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said that the efforts of the rebels opened the way for new forms of resistance, while the tradition of freedom has forever separated Lithuanians, Poles, Ukrainians and Belarusians from Russia, writes LRT.

Nauseda emphasized that the example of Ukraine shows that the desire for freedom cannot be defeated.

"It is the inherited tradition of freedom that has forever separated our peoples - Lithuanians, Poles, Ukrainians, Belarusians - from Russia, which made every effort but failed to destroy this invisible but extremely strong border," Nauseda said.

The president said that the desire for freedom accompanied the ancestors from one uprising to another, helped them survive new waves of repression, forced indoctrination and destruction of national identity. According to him, the same commitment to freedom persists to this day.

"Today we see it most clearly in the struggling Ukraine. (...) The example of Ukraine shows most clearly that the genuine, sincere desire for freedom cannot be broken. Once unleashed as a powerful force, it leaves an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of the people. Assassinations, repression and propaganda pressure only further unite, strengthen the resolve to resist and bring victory closer. As I believe, one day the democratic forces of our neighbors - Belarusians - will also win," stressed Nauseda.
