A former diplomat explained how to respond to the dictator's provocations.
Former Polish diplomat Witold Jurash described how Poland, at the time, “responded” to the Belarusian authorities’ pressure on the Polish minority in Belarus. In 2010, Jurash headed the political section of the Polish Embassy in Minsk, and from April 2010 to February 2011, he served as chargé d’affaires ad interim. After ending his diplomatic career, he became a journalist and columnist.
In a conversation with journalist Bogdan Rimanovsky on his YouTube channel, Yurash recalled his work in Belarus. According to him, at that time, the Belarusian authorities regularly created problems for representatives of the Polish minority.
As Yurash explained, the Polish side spent a long time considering how to respond. In the end, they decided to create trouble for the Belarusian side itself, taking advantage of the fact that many members of the elite in the Grodno and Brest regions traveled to Białystok and Biała Podlaska to shop. Diplomats compiled a list of the most influential Belarusians and their wives.
“They began to be detained at the border entirely by chance. Just by chance, the interior headliner was pried open in the new car of the wife of one of the key Belarusian officials, because a drug-sniffing dog had detected drugs. No drugs were found, but it was an unpleasant experience,” Yurash said.
According to him, about two weeks later, the Belarusian side proposed putting an end to the mutual nitpicking. However, the Poles wanted Minsk to fully understand the reason behind what was happening at the border. At that point, the diplomat claims, they agreed that one of the heads of the Polish Border Guard would call him from Warsaw on an open line—which he believes was being tapped by the Belarusian intelligence services—and ask whether to continue the “commotion” against the Belarusians or if the Belarusian side had already backed down.
Yurash is confident that this method of communication proved to be more understandable to the Belarusian authorities.
