Belarusians On Buying An Apartment: We Would Have Had To Start Saving Back In 1901

How can a young family in Belarus find a place to live?

A resident of Vitebsk _liza_1902_ asked for advice on Threads about buying her own apartment.

“How can a young family in Belarus get a place to live?” she writes. “Every day, I feel like this is becoming more and more unrealistic. Share your stories about housing.

Having children just to get an apartment isn’t an option! First, you need stability and a roof over your head; then come the children.”

Belarusians responded to the post’s author and shared their own stories about buying a home. The website Charter97.org features some of the comments:

— My husband and I bought a single-family home 25 km from Lida with a 20-year mortgage and no down payment. The monthly payment is 600 rubles and is gradually decreasing. Why so far away? Because we realized that the closer to the city, the more expensive it is, and we have no one to help us—no inheritance, no other kind of assistance.

— You should have started saving back in the year listed in your username—1901. Maybe by then you already had a one-room apartment in Minsk.

— The most practical option: move to Europe and save up for an apartment, but that means sacrificing five years of a normal life.

— Without help, I don’t know how people can buy an apartment these days. You either have to earn a lot of money or really cut back on your expenses. By the way, they don’t give them to large families for free either; you need about 15–25 thousand dollars of your own.

— A mortgage, with a monthly payment of 1,500. But what can you do?

— Work three jobs, like many people do.
