Belarusians Raised More Than 105,000 Rubles For A Dog Shelter

In just two days.

In just two days, 105,000 rubles were raised for the “Hachiko” dog shelter in Bobruisk, which is run by the animal welfare organization “Five Freedoms,” to purchase the land where the animals live. The organization’s chairwoman, Alena Grevtseva, shared this on Instagram, according to “Zerkalo”.

Alena mentioned two days ago that the shelter is being evicted from the plot where enclosures housing 160 dogs have stood for several years.

“We bought a former café building a few years ago to use as a shelter. We currently have about 300 dogs. Near our shelter, we leased a 36-sotok plot of land to house our dogs there. We built enclosures, and as of today, we have about 160 dogs there. That plot of land was put up for sale. The landowner sued us. Naturally, we lost the case,” Alena said.

According to the court’s ruling, the shelter was required to vacate the premises by October 2. For a month, volunteers tried to resolve the issue on their own. City officials offered them some options, but the volunteers felt it would be impractical to split the shelter into two parts. And moving all 300 dogs would have been very expensive. So the volunteers were left with only two options: either buy the property, which costs 105,000 rubles, or release all the dogs.

“But we can’t release the dogs—that would mean they’d have to be euthanized. We’re desperately asking for help and donations. Friends, we have very little time left, but we believe in the power of the internet, and we believe in love,” Alena told her followers two days ago.

By the evening of October 1, she announced that the full amount needed to purchase the land had been raised.

“Friends! This is a victory, and it all happened only thanks to you, your support, and your belief that we’ll make it happen! Any money raised beyond the target amount will go toward developing the very plot of land that we’ve managed to purchase together! We really want to move the dogs from the building to outdoor enclosures. The funds raised will allow us to provide our furry friends with better conditions!” Alena said.
