U.S. Senators On Trump's Deal With Putin: This Is A Complete Betrayal

The diesel agreement eases the pressure of sanctions on Russia.

Democratic U.S. senators criticized the decision by the Donald Trump administration to allow the purchase of Russian diesel fuel for six months. They stated that this harms Ukraine and weakens the pressure of sanctions on Russia.

This is stated in a joint statement published on the website of the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations.

The statement was signed by Senator Jean Shaheen, Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and Senator Elizabeth Warren.

The senators criticized Trump’s decision regarding Russian diesel fuel

This refers to General License No. 135, which the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued following an agreement between Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

“President Trump’s announcement that the United States will allow the purchase of Russian diesel worldwide for six months is a complete betrayal of Ukraine, our European allies, and America’s national security,” the statement reads.

Democrats linked the Trump administration’s decision to rising fuel prices in the U.S. and Europe amid the war with Iran. In their view, the president is attempting to remedy the situation through agreements with Russia, sacrificing the interests of Ukraine and allies for the sake of his own political prospects.

Democrats Accuse Trump of Weakening Sanctions Against Russia
Separately, senators stated that the administration’s decision ignores legislation and the bipartisan position of the U.S. Congress.

According to them, just a few weeks ago, lawmakers passed a law aimed at limiting the revenue of the Russian military machine and the purchase of Russian energy resources.

The senators called on Trump to focus on ending the war with Iran, rather than on measures that, in their view, could help finance Russian aggression.
“Enough is enough. The president must end his war with Iran, not finance Russia’s military machine. Putin responds only to force, and that means taking tough action against Russia and those who help it wage war against Ukraine,” the authors of the statement emphasized.
