Psychologists Have Identified Seven Ways To Change Someone's Mind

Direct arguments often only reinforce the other person's beliefs.

However, there are ways to conduct a conversation so that the other person is willing to look at the situation from a different perspective. Seven strategies are described at Psychology Today (translation by Charter97.org).

1. Start small. Don’t try to change the person’s mind about everything right away. Choose one issue and don’t push it if the other person isn’t ready to discuss it.

2. Consider group identity. People often view their beliefs as part of their identity and defend them alongside their group.

3. Start from a place of good intentions. Instead of making accusations, ask why the person holds that position, and try to understand their experience.
4. Look for doubts. If the other person already admits they might be wrong, carefully discuss the contradictions in their arguments. Pressure, on the other hand, can make them even more certain of their views.

5. Learn to ask questions. Clarify what the person means by their words, and help them examine the logic of their reasoning on their own.

6. Join forces with like-minded people. Joint actions and participation in organizations that share your values increase your ability to influence society.
7. Use your strengths. You don’t have to argue in person—letters, articles, creative work, and everyday decisions can also influence the views of those around you.

“First, show empathy and ask them to explain their point of view, rather than insisting on your own,” psychologists advise.

The main idea is simple: to change someone else’s opinion, it’s often more helpful to listen and ask questions than to try to prove you’re right at all costs.
