Many Belarusians are following the girl's story.
The mother of Ksyusha Maisenko had her parental rights terminated by a court order on October 14. This was reported by volunteers who are caring for the girl.
Many Belarusians are following the story of Ksyusha, who has SMA. It is thanks to the help of ordinary people that the girl was able to raise $1.8 million for the Zolgensma injection.
As a reminder, for the past year and a half, the girl has been living in a specialized children’s home in Mogilev. She was diagnosed in 2024.
The girl’s father has passed away. Her mother could not cope with the situation and placed her daughter in the children’s home. However, the woman was not deprived of her parental rights.
In addition to Ksyusha, Nina Sankova (that is the mother’s name) has three other children. All of them were classified as “children left without parental care until the causes that led to their recognition as needing state protection are resolved.” In mid-April, volunteers reported that officials had filed a petition with the court to terminate Nina’s parental rights.
The woman herself called her actions a mistake and stated that she is now doing everything she can to get her children back.
“Right now, I’m working, I’m not drinking, and I’m trying to do everything in my power. And I want to ask you to help me bring my children home so they can be with me. Yes, I made a mistake—I admit it—but I want my children back; please help me with this,” Nina said in a video message posted in late April.
However, the court ultimately terminated the woman’s parental rights.
